The Brampton Chess Park
Championships were held in downtown Brampton, at
Brampton’s new Chess Park at Vivian Lane. The Chess
Park is a great new addition to social and community
activities in downtown Brampton. The event was
sponsored by the City of Brampton, the Rose Theatre,
The Brampton Downtown Development Corporation, The
Brampton Rotary Club, and Brampton Businesses:
Cybersolutions, Little Chess Mates, Coffee Culture,
Julie’s Ice Cream House, and Beaux Arts Coffee Shop.
Despite a little fresh rain,
the event proceeded, protected by tent cover, in a
pleasant outdoor setting. There were events from 9am
to 5pm, Saturday, 13 September 2008. Between 9am –
11 am Brampton Chess Club Players challenged other
chess players to a simultaneous challenge (where 1
players plays many players at the same time). The
main tournaments started at 11:00 am with a Youth
Chess Championships won by two players, Adam Domurad
(aged 17) and Anand Ravi (Age 12). In a playoff
match, Adam won First Place and Second Place went to
Anand.
The Open Adult Chess
Championship was won by Barry Thorvardson, who also
won the 3pm 5 Minute Speed Chess Championships.
Alice Laimer won the top Women’s Championship.
Most importantly, all players
had fun, everyone won prizes, and it was a great
social and competitive event.
